Yields may be down from last year's highs, but there is still plenty for income investors to like about investment-grade corporate bonds, according to UBS. The effective yield on the ICE BofA U.S. Corporate Bond Index , which tracks the performance of U.S. dollar-denominated investment-grade corporate debt, is currently hovering around 5.5%. "This measures IG's return over duration-matched Treasuries, meaning that it's been advantageous to own IG over U.S. government bonds," he added. Inside the investment grade market, UBS prefers the financial sector over nonfinancial issuers, and favors short- and intermediate-term duration. Meanwhile, the spread pickup from A-rated bonds to BBB-rated bonds is historically tight, on average.

The housing market is flashing signs of life, Compass CEO Robert Reffkin said. AdvertisementThe housing market is flashing a handful of bullish signals for the year ahead, according to Compass CEO Robert Reffkin. The founder of one of the nation's top real estate brokerages said he believed the housing market will be on the path to recovery in 2024. But more owners appear to be moving out of necessity or have warmed up to the idea of selling as mortgage rates head lower. At this rate, buyers are outpacing sellers in the market, Reffkin said, noting that Compass's real estate agents are seeing more business in the new year.

Investors who hope to generate portfolio income while recession fears ramp higher can seek some safety in municipal bonds. Wells Fargo Investment Institute recently issued its fixed income guidance for 2024, forecasting "higher for longer" rates across the yield curve as the Federal Reserve remains vigilant to bring down inflation. Municipal bonds offer a combination of characteristics that appeal to investors: General obligation bonds are backed by the revenue of the municipality issuing them. "Going into a slowdown, you anticipate rates to fall," said Brian Rehling, head of global fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. The top marginal income tax rate is 13.3% in California and well over 10% in New York and New Jersey.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service lowered its outlook on the U.S. government's debt on Friday to “negative” from “stable,” citing the cost of rising interest rates and political polarization in Congress. Moody's retained its top triple-A credit rating on U.S. government debt, though it is the last of the three major credit rating agencies to do so. A reduced outlook, however, raises the risk that Moody's could eventually strip its triple-A rating from the U.S. as well. A lower rating on U.S. debt could cost taxpayers if it leads borrowers to demand higher interest rates on Treasury bills and notes. Analysts have warned that with interest rates heading higher, interest costs on the national debt will eat up a rising share of tax revenue.

Fitch downgrades Egypt one notch deeper into junk territory
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The downgrade reflects increased risks to Egypt's external financing, macroeconomic stability and the trajectory of already-high government debt, the rating agency said. The ratings agency said it expects Egypt to face a significant rise in external debt maturities in fiscal years ending June 2024 and June 2025, from that which ended in June 2023. The rating agency expects receipts from tourism, the Suez Canal and a recovery of remittances to help contain financing needs from larger imports. "Israel-Hamas war poses significant downside risks to tourism, although we build in some near-term hit," Fitch said. In October, fellow ratings agencies Moody's and Standard & Poor's (S&P) both downgraded Egypt's credit ratings by a notch.

REUTERS/Hollie Adams/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 20 (Reuters) - Ratings agency Moody's revised Britain's outlook to "stable" from "negative" on Friday, saying policy predictability has been restored after heightened volatility last year around the so-called "mini-budget" under then-Prime Minister Liz Truss. Moody's last changed its outlook on Britain one year ago, when Truss had spooked markets with unfunded tax pledges, culminating in her resignation. "Policy predictability has been restored after heightened volatility last year around the mini-budget," the ratings agency said, affirming the country's rating at "Aa3". The government borrowed 81.7 billion pounds ($99.35 billion) in the first half of the 2023/24 financial year, 15.3 billion pounds more than between April and September 2022, but about 20 billion pounds less than the government forecast in March. "The problem is that the ratings we are making for the African [countries] should be different," Ibrahima Sory Sylla, ambassador for the West African country of Senegal, said Thursday at an event at Peking University. The research claimed every 1% increase in Chinese loans resulted in an increase of 0.176% in African economic growth. Allan Joseph Chintedza, ambassador of Malawi to China, said the report should look also at the repayment period for Chinese loans. Cooper Neill | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe stock sell-off that hit regional banks this year has exposed lenders including Zions and Comerica to the risk of being delisted from the Standard & Poor's 500 index. This year's regional banking crisis has already caused changes in the composition of the S&P 500, the most popular broad measure of large American companies in the investing world. Companies that no longer qualify as large-cap stocks are at heightened risk of demotion from the S&P 500. S&P guidelinesTo be considered for inclusion in the S&P 500, companies need to have a market capitalization of at least $14.5 billion and meet profitability and trading standards. The committee that decides the composition of the S&P 500 looks to minimize churn and accurately represent reference sectors, making changes only when "ongoing conditions warrant an index change," according to S&P.

REUTERS/Yuri Gripas/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMARRAKECH, Morocco, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Senior executives at multilateral development banks will meet on Wednesday with the top credit ratings agencies, bank executives said, amid a broad push to expand their lending capacity and help countries brace for climate change and other challenges. The World Bank's main lending arms could expand their lending capacity by nearly $900 billion if the ratings agencies changed their processes and modified the allowance they make for callable capital, a study commissioned by Rockefeller found. Lakshmi Shyam-Sunder, the World Bank's chief risk officer, said the ratings agencies had shown some openness to considering revisions in how they treat callable capital in the banks' balance sheets. Casali said Wednesday's meeting, on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Morocco, would include officials from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank, along with the three top credit raters - Moody's, Standard & Poor's and Fitch. Currently, the ratings agencies apply widely different rules and standards in assessing the risks associated with the banks' lending and balance sheets.

Regional bank stocks, in particular, gained as much as 35% before the bond warnings and downgrades began. The Standard & Poor's 500 total return index (.SPXTR), including reinvested dividends, delivered an 8.7% return in the second quarter, its largest gain since the final three months of 2021. Household wealth at the end of June exceeded the previous record high of $152.49 trillion set in the first quarter of 2022 by about $1.8 trillion, or 1.2%. Debt levels for households, businesses and governments kept rising in the second quarter, though the pace of increase varied widely by sector. Business debt growth, meanwhile, moderated substantially, climbing at just a 1.9% annualized rate in the second quarter, its slowest growth since the final three months of 2020.
